Since January 1, 2025, California drivers must carry at least $30,000 for injury or death to one person, $60,000 for injury or death to more than one person, and $15,000 for property damage. This is often written as 30/60/15.
This liability coverage pays for injuries and damage you cause to others. It doesn’t pay for your own injuries or your own car. You must show proof of insurance when you register your vehicle with the DMV, if you’re pulled over, and after an accident. Driving without insurance can lead to fines, vehicle impound, and a suspended license and registration.
Most Central Valley drivers are better protected with higher liability limits plus Uninsured Motorist, Medical Payments, Comprehensive, and Collision coverage. Income-eligible drivers with good records may qualify for the California Low Cost Auto Insurance Program.
